The concept of functional module independence is a direct result of the concepts of functional modularity, abstraction, information concealment, and localization.
Abstract refers to the concentration and generalization of certain similar aspects between things, states, or processes, while temporarily ignoring their differences, that is, considering the essential characteristics of abstract things without considering their details. Information concealment refers to the redesign of a functional module so that the information (processes or data) contained within it cannot be accessed by functional modules that do not require this information. The principle of information concealment can bring great benefits to modifying software during software maintenance in the future, as a large amount of data and processes are imperceptible to other parts of the software. Therefore, when modifying a certain functional module, it is unlikely to affect other parts of the software. Localization refers to bringing some closely related software elements closer to each other in physical positions.
Functional module independence is achieved by developing functional modules that have a single function and are not closely related to other functional modules. Each functional module only involves a specific subfunction required by the software, and the interface with other parts of the software structure is simple.
Software interfaces with good functional module independence are simple and easy to develop. Independent functional modules are also relatively easy to test and maintain, limiting the modification side effects caused by close connections between functional modules. Independence is an important factor in ensuring software quality.
