Industry at Critical Inflection Point Amid Economic Pressures and AI Integration

SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA - May 29, 2024 - Fictiv, a global manufacturing company, today announced the release of its ninth-annual State of Manufacturing Report—an industry-leading survey of manufacturing leaders that tracks perspectives on the economy, supply chain, AI, sustainability and more.   Following years of supply chain disruptions, global tensions and a recent drive to adopt AI, the survey indicates that the manufacturing industry is at an inflection point—poised between innovation, growth and the drive to reduce costs and increase profitability.   Manufacturing leaders report economic headwinds (47%) as most impacting their 2024 strategy, as well as labor costs and shortages (39%). Other factors include increasing competition, increasing pressure to drive profitability, and changes in consumer behavior and spending. For the third year in a row, the top priority for leaders is improving manufacturing and supply chain visibility (54%), followed by increasing supply chain resilience and agility (48%).   Leaders remain excited by AI, and this year, the emerging technology has become essential to companies in the manufacturing industry. Now, 88% of companies have implemented AI into their manufacturing and supply chains, and 84% of those implementations already provide value.   Overall, prioritizing investments in sustainable manufacturing remains steady for a second year in a row, with 42% of respondents continuing to cite it as a priority. This is likely because sustainability has been embedded into company values and practices (53%).   "The last four years have redefined what a world-class operations or supply chain team needs to operate successfully in a tough economic environment,” said Dave Evans, co-founder and CEO of Fictiv. “It’s become the expectation for supply chain teams to decrease costs, get products to market faster, all while doing more with less due to lower expenses as companies push to profitability as their number one metric. With all of the headwinds faced in navigating risks over the last four years, supply chain leaders have one of the toughest jobs on the planet. Now, these leaders are battle-hardened and looking for efficiencies everywhere, turning to technology and regionalization strategies.”   Additional insights include: AI and Hiring - 87% of respondents agree that implementing AI into manufacturing is “...vital to my company's future success.” Notably, nearly half of companies say that AI has enabled them to reduce planned hiring, and 34% expect AI to impact hiring in the next two years. New Product Innovation - Focus on increasing the speed of innovation (45%) remains high and reports of barriers to innovation have decreased across the board. In fact, the number of respondents reporting no barriers (15%) more than doubled since last year to its highest level in four years. Global Supply Chain - 86% of respondents say global tensions are a long-ter...

Sweetch Energy to Optimize Zero-carbon Electricity Generation Tech Using Rockwell's Process Control Platform

Rockwell Automation, Inc., the world's largest company dedicated to industrial automation and digital transformation, announced that it will support the automation of Sweetch Energy's unique power generation technology through the deployment of a process control system and remote operations visualization. Sweetch Energy's first osmotic demonstrator plant is currently under construction and will soon be operational at the Barcarin lock in Port-Saint-Louis-du-Rhône, France. The company plans to deploy several osmotic stations at the mouth of the Rhône to harness natural osmotic energy. These stations will represent up to 500 MW of carbon-free electricity production capacity, capable of supplying more than 1.5 million people – the equivalent to the population of cities such as Marseille and its surrounding areas, Barcelona, Amsterdam or Montreal. "Sweetch Energy mirrors our own deep commitment to sustainability and the development of enabling technologies," said Eric Chalengeas, regional vice president, south region, Rockwell Automation. "We are delighted that our process solutions, visualization technology and domain expertise are being deployed in such a fascinating project. As well as helping Sweetch Energy scale and enhance its technology, our global presence will also help it expand into other regions, where we can continue to offer comprehensive global service and support." Osmotic energy is naturally generated by the difference in salinity between freshwater and seawater. The INOD (Ionic Nano Osmotic Diffusion) technology developed by Sweetch Energy is the first technology of its kind to be marketed on an industrial scale. Manufactured using environmentally friendly bio-sourced materials, the osmotic generators using the technology can be located at any estuary or delta. Water is the only input and in the process and is fully returned to the river mouth, with no chemical waste or pollutants created. And, unlike other renewables, it is not dependent on weather conditions and can produce clean electricity continuously. The technology can also be incorporated into locally sympathetic structures, hidden away, or even installed underground. Rockwell's technologies will be used to automate, control and monitor the system as well as optimize the process and power-generation efficiency. The technology to be deployed at the pilot plant is also highly scalable, allowing Sweetch Energy to create standardized, modular installations, with worldwide support, of any size anywhere. Nicolas Heuzé, co-founder and CEO of Sweetch Energy, explains: "Our INOD technology is addressing the challenge of producing clean, competitively priced electricity that's available 24/7. Thanks to INOD, osmotic energy will become a main component of the global energy mix. Rockwell's expertise in process control, sustainability, and its global reach makes it an excellent partner for Sweetch Energy as w...

Real-time Data from Connected Factory is Key to Driving Innovation and Delivering Competitive Advantages

Analog Devices, Inc. (Nasdaq: ADI) announced a newly commissioned study conducted by Forrester Consulting on behalf of Analog Devices, that shows that industrial manufacturers who have made investments in connectivity technologies (“high maturity”) are better positioned to drive innovation and gain a competitive advantage compared to firms that have been slower to implement connectivity (“low maturity”) across the factory floor. The study, based on a survey of more than 300 manufacturing, operations and connectivity executives across the globe, found that 85% of high maturity firms are currently using Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) technologies across much of the factory floor, compared to 17% of low maturity organizations. Over half (53%) of low maturity organizations report that their legacy equipment is unable to communicate with other assets. Connected firms believe that improving network reliability (including adding 5G networks) will create significant opportunity: 68% of high maturity firms say this will enable them to make better use of existing cloud infrastructure and 66% believe their industrial data and IP will be more secure. Conversely, only 21% of low maturity firms believe that improving network reliability will help improve security. However, all respondents agree that improving network reliability will improve efficiency by freeing up employees who are constantly resolving downtime issues. Low maturity firms struggle with security risk: 54% say that their lack of sophisticated cybersecurity strategy puts their business, customer, and employee safety at risk. The human element continues to pose challenges: Almost half (47%) of low maturity firms say they lack the expertise to understand which connectivity technologies to invest in, indicating a skills gap. Even high maturity firms report that it is not easy for them to access the insights they need to make labor planning and safety decisions. Real-time monitoring of equipment and productivity demonstrates an acute awareness of the high cost of unscheduled downtime: High (5%) and medium (17%) maturity firms reported much lower occurrence of unscheduled downtime of their industrial technology or equipment each week than low maturity companies (53%). These interruptions lead to higher cost of holding inventory and labor per unit, loss of production and customer confidence and decreased work capacity. This research shows us that while many firms are benefiting from the promise of industrial connectivity, others have significant legacy and talent-related hurdles to overcome. Both a shortage of in-house expertise and interoperability of systems and data are two major hindrances to manufacturing modernization. For this study, “Seamless Connectivity Fuels Industrial Innovation” (March 2021) – commissioned by Analog Devices – Forrester Consulting conducted a global online survey of 312 industrial connectivity strategy leaders. Survey participants included decision-makers in IT, oper...
